Sunny crystals, goal setting, and bringing a plate for a kiwi barbecue.

These are just a few of the ways the Summer Solstice can be celebrated. Happening on the 22nd December (peaking at 10.47am),  the summer solstice is the longest day of the year – with the sun at its peak power.

The strong sun brings us inner power, new beginnings, abundance, joy, and harmony.

People have been celebrating the summer solstice all throughout history. The Neolithic stone circle Stonehenge in the UK is thought to have been built purely for summer and winter solstices, with celebrations taking place there each year to manifest a good summer’s harvest. People in Ancient China celebrated the summer solstice as a time of fertility, femininity, and yin energy.

But how can we acknowledge, respect, and utilise this powerful time of year in the modern age?

Ways to Celebrate

1. Connect with others

Take some time today to see a loved one or get a group together for a Kiwi barbecue to unwind from the craziness at this time of year. The summer solstice has historically been a time of community, for people to come together and celebrate the year passed and the year ahead.

2. Connect with nature

Enjoy the way the sun feels on your skin. (Or rain, with the weather we’ve been experiencing here in Kapiti!). Tend to plants, lay in the grass, or even inhale some fresh air. You might want to place some sunflowers in a vase or take a long nature walk and reconnect with the beautiful world around us here in Aotearoa.

3. Feed your mind

Sit down with a hot drink and make time to finish that book you’ve left on the coffee table. Or you might want to meditate, or journal – whatever mental self-care looks like for you. And while you’re there…

4. Make a wish

This is a perfect time of year to manifest your goals. Think of the summer solstice like a full moon – but with fire. This energy can help to kickstart all you want to achieve and lay the foundations now for some new year resolutions. Make a wish at 11:11, or write down some dreams you want to make a reality. Speak them into existence, or keep them growing like a kumara plant in your mind – either way, you have the sun on your side.

5. Get down with crystals

There are many crystals attuned to the energy of the sun, which will be useful for you at this time of year. Here are some of our favourites:
